Casting The Magick Circle

This circle casting is an adapted circle casting for a Solitary Practitioner written by Symandinome.

It should be noted that circle casting comes in many different forms. This version is just one way to cast a magick circle. The manner in which i describe below will show you how to cast an effective magick circle without the use of special tools that you may or may not have. The circle i have provided can be used for spell casting as well as sabbat rituals or almost any other purpose. This is a very simplistic method. The reason for not including all the tools and such is because chances are that a person who has acquired all these tools will already know how to cast a circle using them. This example is for the benefit of new and inexperienced witches who need to learn the basic fundamentals of circle casting so they can expand upon their knowledge in the future.

Circle sizes will vary between the individuals using them. The traditional size is around 9 feet in diameter. This is not something that is always possible. When preparing to construct your circle you need to take into consideration whether or not you have enough space to move freely around your altar and within your working area so that you do not bump into or trip over things.

In the example below, you will find that this is a north facing altar and that the circle casting itself with start and end in the northern part of your working area but your quarter calls will start in the east. This is only one option. Many people have their altars facing a wide variety of directions; with east being the other most popular choice. I'd also like to note that I have chosen to use the words God and Goddess instead of naming a specific deity. This is because many people are unsure of which deities they would like to work with. Using the words God an Goddess are perfectly acceptable alternatives to calling upon a specific deity.

Things you will need:

1 white votive candle to be your altar/working candle
1 green votive candle to be your quarter candle for north/earth
1 yellow votive candle to be your quarter candle for east/air
1 red votive candle to be your quarter candle for south/fire
1 blue votive candle to be your quarter candle to west/water
1 silver candle to be your goddess candle
1 gold candle to be your god candle
candle holders for all candles
a lighter/matches
1 bowl filled with salt
1 blow filled with water
Incense/ incense holder (sandalwood is a good all purpose incense)

Begin by clearing an area for you to work in. Be sure to have full access to all sides of your altar so that you may walk easily between it and the border of the circle you will cast.

Next set up your altar and place your quarter candles into position. See Diagram below for suggested setup:

Now, with everything set up your ready to begin.

Start with closing your eyes and relax your mind and body by following your breath in and out. See in your mind's eye all the troubles of your day and excess energy falling away from you and going into the earth. Once you feel totally relaxed, open your eyes and kneel before your altar. Think about what it is your about to do and your reasons for doing it. Then take the bowl of water and move it closer in front of you. With your fingers of your projecting hand (right hand if your right handed), touch the water and move your fingers in a counter-clockwise circle 3 times and say:

" I exorcise thee O spirit of Water, that you may be free of all malignity and uncleanliness. I command all ill influence to depart at once, in the name of the God and Goddess."

Now, take the bowl of salt and and place your fingers in it with the same hand you used for the water and say:

"I exorcise thee O creature of Salt, that you may be free of all malignity and uncleanliness. I command all ill influence to depart at once in the name of the God and Goddess."

Take 3 pinches of salt and put them into the bowl of water and stir the water 3 times clockwise and say:

"Bone of the Earth and Blood of the Sky, joined In unity and consecrated by the names most high."

Return the bowl of salt back to its place on the altar. The bowl of water may remain for now. Take the incense and move it closer to you and light the incense and say:

"In the name of the God and Goddess, do I bring forth by your smoke, protection and purification."

The incense may stay where it is for the moment. Light the white candle and say:

"In the name of the God and Goddess, do I bring forth by your flame, protection and purification."

Take your fingers from your projecting hand and dip them into the bowl of water and with your wet fingers draw a sunwheel or a pentagram upon your forehead and say:

"I consecrate myself in the name of the God and Goddess. By tree and flame, wave and wind, let not but love, enter in."

Return the bowl of water to its original place on the altar. Take up the incense and let the smoke envelop your body. Waft the smoke over your head by fanning it with your hand. Take the incense and pass it all around your body under your arms, around your legs, etc. As you are doing this say:

"By the sacred smoke of the Gods am I now duly consecrated. So Mote It Be."

Return the incense to its place on the altar and stand up if you are not already doing so. Being mindful to walk in a clockwise direction head around the left side of your altar picking up the bowl of salted water on your way. Make your way to the northern most part of your circle and start sprinkling the water with the fingers of your projecting hand as you walk clockwise along the border of what will become your magick circle. Know that by doing this, you are purifying the area so that you may do your magickal rites there.

Be sure to walk a complete circle and ending in the same place you started. Once this is complete continue to walk clockwise until you return back in front of your altar where you were kneeling.

At this time, take up the incense and return to the north and once again walk the circle in a clockwise manner. Once you have made a complete circle again return back in front of the altar. Repeat this process with the white candle as well. Each time always walking clockwise around the circle and each time knowing that you are further cleansing the area.

Once you have done the above now you must return to the north part of your working area once more so that you may cast the circle.

Clear your mind and visualize a brilliant white light coming down from the heavens through your head and filling your body. See this light flowing down your projecting arm. Walk the circle one more time counter clockwise while visualizing this light shooting from your fingertips of your projecting hand. See this light creating a barrier between your working area and the area outside this space. This light is an unbroken steady stream of light/energy that is flowing through you and out of you to create this sacred space. This is a perfect and powerful light that nothing may penetrate without your consent. Walk the border of your circle clockwise while projecting this light not stopping until you make one complete pass of the circle. Say the following as you walk the circle:

"I conjure thee, O Circle of Power, that thou mayest be a Boundary, a Rampart, and a Meeting Place between the world of men and the realms of the Mighty Ones, A Guardian and a Protection that shall preserve and contain the Power which I shall raise within thee, Wherefore do I Bless and Consecrate thee."

Once you have complete walked the circle saying the above while visualizing the brilliant white light then you may return back before the altar still always walking clockwise. Raise your hands high in the air and say:

"The Circle Is Cast So Mote It Be."

Now it is time to call the quarters. Be sure that your lighter or matches is easily accessible to you as you will need it to light the quarter candles as the need arises.

Begin by walking clockwise around the altar until you end up facing East. With arms raised high say:

"Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtowers of the East, Powers of Air and Inspiration. I summon, stir, and call ye up that thou mayest guard and aid me in my rites."

Trace in the air with your projecting hand the invoking pentagram for Air. Once completed, push through the center of the pentagram with force as if you were punching a whole through the center.

Now, light the yellow candle and say:

"Hail and Welcome"

Moving clockwise, go and face the South and with arms raised high say:

"Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtowers of the South, Powers of Fire and Strength. I summon, stir, and call ye up that thou mayest guard and aid me in my rites."

Trace in the air with your projecting hand the invoking pentagram for Fire. Once completed, push through the center of the pentagram with force as if you were punching a whole through the center.

Now light the red candle and say:

"Hail and Welcome"

Continue moving clockwise, go and face the West and with arms raised high say:

"Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtowers of the West, Powers of Water and Intuition. I summon, stir, and call ye up that thou mayest guard and aid me in my rites."

Trace in the air with your projecting hand the invoking pentagram for Water. Once completed, push through the center of the pentagram with force as if you were punching a whole through the center.

Now light the blue candle and say:

"Hail and Welcome"

Continue moving clockwise, go and face the North and with arms raised high say:

"Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtowers of the North, Powers of Earth and Stability. I summon, stir, and call ye up that thou mayest guard and aid me in my rites."

Trace in the air with your projecting hand the invoking pentagram for Water. Once completed, push through the center of the pentagram with force as if you were punching a whole through the center.

Now light the green candle and say:

"Hail and Welcome"

Walk clockwise back to the front of your altar and raise your hands high and wide above your head and say:

"The Temple Is Erected So Mote It Be."

Now it is time to invoke the God and the Goddess to your circle. Assume the goddess position as shown below and say:

"Hail to you O Ancient Mother from which all life comes and to which all life goes. I welcome you to my circle to witness in my rite of (insert ritual name, type, or purpose here)"

Now light the silver candle.

Now assume the god position as shown below and say:

"Hail to you O Ancient Father, Horned Hunter of the Night, provider and protector of the world. I welcome you to my circle to witness in my rite of (insert ritual name, type, or purpose here)"

Now light the gold candle.

With arms raised high above you in salute say:

"Hail to the Lord and Lady and praise be to the gods."

At this point all the steps for circle construction, quarter calling and deity invocation are complete. Now is the time you would perform any rituals or magickal spells you had planned on working.

When you are finished doing your intended working it is customary to give an offering in a short ritual called Cakes and Ale. The cakes part of cakes and ale is usually a piece of bread, slice of cake, or some cookies. That you say a prayer of thanks over and make an offering of some to the gods. The ale part is a glass of wine, beer, fruit juice, milk or water that you say a prayer of thanks over and make an offering of some to the gods. This is done to show your appreciation for what they have done for you, what they do for you, and what they will do for you in the future.

With that completed it is time to Close the circle. This is done in reverse order of the way that you casted the circle. You start the close of the circle by saying goodbye to the god and goddess.

Once again assume the goddess position and say:

"Gracious Mother, I thank you for your attendance at my circle and for witnessing these rites. Stay if thy will, Leave if thy must, Forever are we in peace and harmony. Hail and Farewell."

Extinguish the silver candle by wetting your thumb and forefinger with your saliva and pinch the flame out.

Next, assume the god position and say:

"Sacred Father, I thank you for your attendance at my circle and for witnessing these rites. Stay if thy will, Leave if thy must, Forever are we in peace and harmony. Hail and Farewell."

Extinguish the gold candle by wetting your thumb and forefinger with your saliva and pinch the flame out.

With the above completed walk COUNTER CLOCKWISE in the circle to the North and with arms raised high say:

"Mighty Ones of the North, I thank you for attending, and ere you depart for your lovely realms, Hail and Farewell."

Trace in the air the BANISHING pentagram of Earth and punch through the center of it like you did the invoking.

Extinguish the candle in the same manner you did for the god and goddess.

Walk counter-clockwise wise to West and with arms raised high say:

"Mighty Ones of the West, I thank you for attending, and ere you depart for your lovely realms, Hail and Farewell."

Trace in the air the BANISHING pentagram of Water and punch through the center of it like you did the invoking.

Extinguish candle.

Walk counter clockwise to South and with arms raised high say:

"Mighty Ones of the South, I thank you for attending, and ere you depart for your lovely realms, Hail and Farewell."

Trace in the air the BANISHING pentagram of Fire and punch through the center of it like you did the invoking.

Extinguish candle.

Walk counter clockwise to East and with arms raised high say:

"Mighty Ones of the East, I thank you for attending, and ere you depart for your lovely realms, Hail and Farewell."

Trace in the air the BANISHING pentagram of Air and punch through the center of it like you did the invoking.

Extinguish candle.

Walk counter clockwise back to the front of the altar and raise your hands high and say:

"Hail and Farewell"

Walk counter clockwise back to the North where you started your circle and visualize the white light streaming down your arm and out your fingers again but this time pushing the circle you previously casted into the ground. Walk the full length of the circle just as you had done when you casted it except this time doing it counter-clockwise. Be sure to visualize the circle dissolving and and fading into the ground.

Once you have finished grounding the circle walk to the front of the altar and with arms raised high say:

"The Circle Is Open But Never Broken. The Circle is Closed. So Mote It Be."

Repeat the step at the very beginning where you visualized any excess energy falling away from you and dissipating into the ground. Once this is finished kneel before your altar and say a quiet prayer of thanks and then put away your items and carry on about your day. If you had made an offering during cakes and ale then now would be the time to go and place the cake outside and pour the drink onto the ground.
